According to this source the average commute time in America is 25 minutes. That’s almost an hour a day which translates to just over four hours in a five-day work week. That’s a lot of time to either waste or make the most of. So, do you want to take advantage of that time and make the most of your commute?
Here are 3 ways you can make the most of your commute.
1. Pray (with your eyes open)
Let’s not go all Carrie Underwood and ask Jesus to take the literal wheel of your car. I don’t think that will work out too well for you.
But this is the best way you can make the most of your commute. Spend that 25 minutes or however long you have in prayer. Or even part of the time. Talk to God about what your day holds, what’s on your mind, and pick a few people to pray for. Maybe pick a few co-workers to pray for on your way to work.
Imagine how much your relationship with God would grow if you spent some time each day in prayer on your way to work and even on your way home from work.
2. Listen to an Audio Book
Did you know that the mobile app, YouVersion, has audio versions of the Bible you can listen to? Maybe you’re not much for reading, but you would benefit really well from listening to the Bible. This would be a great way for you to grow in your relationship with God and to start (or end) your day in His word.
In addition to listening to the Bible, you could also take advantage of this great deal that Audible is putting on where, if you click my link you can Try Audible and Get Two Free Audiobooks. What a deal! They have a mobile app where you can take your books with you and listen to them on the go.
Audible has a great library of books to choose from. They currently have 382 Christian non-fiction books that include titles like C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity, Chip Ingram’s Good to Great in God’s Eyes, and many more.
3. Listen to a Podcast
I’m big on podcasts. I’m currently subscribed to 55 different podcasts. I don’t listen to them all, but I browse the new episodes and frequent a few to see what is out there. I regularly make it a point to listen to podcasts while I’m driving. Here are 5 podcasts that will help you grow.
I even have 3 of my own podcasts.
The Abundant Life with Brandon Kelley [iTunes | Stitcher] – a weekly 15 minute podcast that is more like a conversational sermon than anything else. I’m currently walking through the book of John. Come join me.
Spit Happens Podcast [iTunes | Stitcher] – a friend of mine – Tim Campbell – and I started this a few months ago. We talk about real topics and try to offer real hope in seemingly hopeless situations. Come listen to the conversation.
Rookie Preacher Podcast [iTunes | Stitcher] – a friend of mine – Joe Hoagland – and I started this podcast as a part of our website RookiePreacher.com which is a resource for pastors to help them preach and lead better. If you’re a pastor, leader, or public speaker, you’ll benefit from this podcast.
I highly recommend you get a good podcasting app for your phone. I use Podcast Republic for Android which I highly recommend. If you have an iPhone, they have their own podcasting app. I have heard, though, many iPhone users recommend the app Overcast.
Don’t Waste Your Commute
Your commute to and from work offers you some great time to grow in your walk with God. I’ve made it a point to be purposeful in that box of rolling metal (or plastic) and I hope you will to.
