How big is the Jesus you worship?
Do you worship the Jesus designated as a seasoning to sprinkle over your life?
Is the Jesus you worship found in the medicine cabinet – your last attempt to get rid of your pain and trouble?
How big is the Jesus you worship?
Want to listen to this in spoken word?
Is He This Big?
The only Jesus who is worthy of your worship, who is worthy to be called Savior, who is worthy to be called Lord, is this Jesus…
The infinite God, greater than words can describe, was seen through Him. In fact, He is the image of the invisible, infinite, eternal, all-powerful, all-present, all-knowing God. When you look upon this Jesus, you see God Himself.
General contractors, architects, designers, and foremans don’t compare to Him. A blank slate is what He started with and what He created was all that we know and all that we don’t know. The expansive Universe is His creation. He decided, one day, to create and what was made is beyond our comprehension. He created the Milky Way galaxy, one of only one hundred billion galaxies (no big deal), with a special idea. He decided to place within this galaxy, you and me. Such small pieces to this grand creation, this beautiful canvas, so elaborate, so large, so amazing. The Angels look upon what Christ has done, amazed at the detail, the intentionality, they look upon the great canvas of the Universe like Hipsters do at Art galleries – they are blown away.
It wasn’t because of an assignment from the Father that He created all this. He did it for Himself. He did it because He wanted to. That is correct, He created you because He wanted to. He created you for Himself – nothing more, nothing less. What’s the purpose of your life? Christ.
If He ever decided to loosen His embrace, everything would fall apart. All that we know, all laws of physics, all molecules, all cells would cease to exist. It is because of His embrace that we can have the field of science, for without His embrace, all would be random – no meaning, no purpose, no consistency, nothing to observe. All is held together by His embrace. Your life. Your kids. These are all His. How little we think. The entire Universe is His painting, His story, His poem, His creative expression, His novel, His movie, His experience, His.
Joined to Him is the Church. This new community, this new organism is His body. It serves Him, the head. The body serves the mind’s desires and this is true of the Church. A redeemed community of people who have been made brand new by His death on a cross – His adoption of weakness and death so that He could give the Church power and life. Many members, but the same purpose. Christ. Many parts, but the same mind. Christ. What should you do with your life? Whatever Christ says to you. He, though, has said it simply, abide in me.
Christ is all and in all. He is first place in all of creation. He does not live to serve you. He lives to give you life, but never be mistaken of the very source of your life – Christ. You are part of His story. It’s not the other way around. For He is the author and perfecter of your faith, you are not, the pastor is not, the government is not, He is.
He is bigger than any problem you face. He is bigger than any past struggle you have been engaged with. He is bigger than your present. He is bigger than your future. In fact, your past, present, and future, are not even about you. They are about Christ. So maybe we can reword that sentence to say, He is your past, He is your present, and He is your future. This is the case, for before you were even made, He knew what you would do, He knew what you would think, He knew what your quirks would be, He knew what scars would be a part of your body, and He knew what brokenness would hinder you. He knew all this and took it all to the cross with Him so that your past, present, and future could be redeemed and reconciled to Himself so that your story would no longer be yours, but His.
The Trump Card
The trump card of all creation is Christ.
All Scripture testifies of Him. The Father exalts Him. The Spirit magnifies Him. The angels worship Him. The early church knew Him as her passion, her message, and the unction of her life. Christ was her specialty. He was her Bridegroom and head. She specialized in nothing else. All told, there’s nothing worth pursuing outside of Christ. 1
Jesus is everything. He is Creator, Redeemer, King, Friend, and Brother. He is more than words can describe, for He is outside of language and time. We cannot express His glory with the capacities of our minds, let alone put it in words that can be understood. Regardless. We try. We try to inch closer to His glory and majesty, knowing that what we come up with is incomplete.
Despite His power, glory, and majesty, we do not worship a Jesus who is far away. He came down to this earth, taking on flesh, like you and me. He emptied Himself for all of His creation, not wanting anyone to perish, but for all to come to repentance. The giver of life, Jesus, submitted to death for a moment so that He could give you life for eternity.
Death couldn’t hold Him down. He did exactly what He said He would do, rising on the third day. He came out of that borrowed tomb and spent time amongst the people of 1st Century Israel for a little more time before returning to His Heavenly glory at the right hand of the throne of the Father.
Returned to glory He has. Revealed a mystery to us, He has. That is, Christ in you.
Join with me in saying: mind blown.
Christ has taken up residence in you. You live in Him and He lives in you. A mystery revealed, but a reality so complex and amazing – the Creator of the Universe has looked at you and declared, that’ll do.
Wow.
How Big is Your Jesus?
A trick question? Maybe. For there is only one Jesus. He is who He is – Alpha and Omega, beginning and end, limitless, infinite, eternal, the embodiment of all Heavenly glory.
My prayer is that you will see that Jesus is everything. He is not to be put in a box, for there is no box big enough for Him. He is greater than your little brain can even conjure up. He is greater. He is greater. He is greater.
He is so great that we can all declare this:
Christ is all I need. You can strip everything else away from me, and I would still be left with Christ. Take away my gifts and my ministry; take away signs and wonders; take away the sense of His presence; take away my ability to read; and take away every spiritual and religious pursuit I have, and I will still have Christ. And in having Him, I have everything. 1
