The Gathering of Differents Makes a Difference – Spoken Word
Every day, the mirror.
Put those glasses on, vision clearer.
Every day, the echo chamber.
Our ideas, simply nearer.
The mirror and the echo chamber, keep us stagnate.
We don’t move, we just marinate.
We don’t germinate, we simply emanate.
Nothing new, just our ideas, our perspectives.
Comfort zones are no effort zones.
Are we becoming clones,
or even drones?
Do we even want to know?
Look around. What’s in the foreground?
Listen around. What sounds surround?
Homogeny?
Uniformity?
Got us feeling like dissension is persecution.
Why does WalMart look like heaven,
But our Churches only look like Evan?
Why does WalMart sound like beauty,
Why does the workplace sound like diversity?
We’re a couple generations past segregation.
And yet Sunday remains the most segregated day of the week.
At this moment our excuses are perfectly and utterly antique.
Music. Style. Preference.
Bias. Prejudice.
If our stories ended with ‘Merica, this is where we are stuck.
But did you know?
Long long ago,
The dividing wall was overthrown.
Let’s Jesus juke into the truth.
Cross, death, resurrection.
Failure? The end?
Nah. Did you hear me?
I said resurrection.
The great resurgence.
In other words, He wins.
Jesus wins your salvation.
Your restoration.
Your reconciliation.
Your adoption.
Yes, adoption. In other words, family.
In Him and through Him, family.
Blood-bought into the same last name, family.
Jews and Gentiles had to work through this and we must too.
If rejection should’ve happened,
If crucifixion really happened,
If resurrection really happened,
If perfection really has been given,
Then God’s promise has been upheld.
He told Abraham that He would use him.
Every ethnic group would be blessed through him.
And He has.
Homogeny and uniformity, returned and marked insufficient.
Diversity and unity, given and marked mission.
The Church is the gathering of differents that makes a difference.
Get comfy in that discomfort zone.
It’s the blood-bought love zone.
The Church is the gathering of differents that makes a difference.
Homogeny and uniformity, returned and marked insufficient.
Diversity and unity, given and marked mission.
Take up that cross,
Preferences are lost.
Want your church to make a difference?
Let it be a gathering of differents.
Because that is a gathering that makes a difference.
