Does He? Does God really love me? The question burns from the deepest part of me. It wells up like a raging storm disrupting everything inside of me and every thought that goes from me into the world. I wonder. I search. I desire an answer. How can I really know?
I live in a world full of hatred. I’ve stopped leaving the confines of my four walls so that I’m not confronted with anymore reality of the human condition. How could a perfect, just, and loving Creator create such imperfect, unjust, unloving creatures?
Does God Really Love Me?
I’ve been abandoned by everyone. Does God really love me?
My life is consumed by sin. Does God really love me?
I feel entrapped by emptiness. Does God really love me?
I pray, and I pray, and I pray. Does He even hear me? Does God really love me?
Do I attend church? Yes. But even so. I’ve heard countless sermons, illustrations, and word-pictures. I’ve sang songs and prayed prayers. And yet, I still ask the question, does God really love me?
Is that bad? Should I feel ashamed? Or should I simply keep my mouth shut? After all, I don’t want to mess with other people’s facade they’re rockin’. They act like they don’t ever ask the question. They act like they don’t ever struggle with the real doubt of whether or not God loves them.
Let’s just be honest for one moment: faith isn’t easy. To sincerely believe, from the depths of your soul, that the mighty Creator of the Universe has enough attention to detail, enough desire for the lowly, that He would take the time to love me, is a step, a leap of faith.[shareable]Let’s just be honest for one moment: faith isn’t easy.[/shareable]
But to whom shall I leap to if not Him? To whom shall I put my fragile faith in if not Him? He exists. I know this. For the faith it would take to believe otherwise is too great, too much, I don’t have the faith to believe that this is all an accident. Let’s be real for a moment: science makes new discoveries every day. You want to look there for your unshakeable hope? Well, be ready to look through there to get to where I already am here. Unless you decide to fudge the numbers. Just saying.
What’s the Answer?
A resounding yes. Does God love me? Yes! And I believe this. Never have I claimed that it’s an easy thing to believe. But still. That is where my hope is.
Why? Well, why not?
Just start with Jesus if you don’t believe me. What do you say about Him? Are you being intellectually dishonest about Him?
If every television show you watch about Him automatically, from the outset, seeks to prove your prior position you’re either watching the truth or you’re watching a director too uncomfortable with the truth that he/she made an entire movie to make them feel better. It helps their faith that is too much in a world that is accidental. Allow me to show you how we’re all an accident! What a noble endeavor. Do you smell my sarcasm?
Back to the point: what do you say about Jesus? Is He merely a man? Or was there something significant about Him that would cause thousands upon thousands of people in the first Century who knew Him when He was alive to claim that He had risen from the dead and is no longer in the tomb?
Does God really love me? Yes! But I don’t know why. Well, I kind of do. Because He is love. And because of Jesus. And because of God’s Spirit’s work inside of me.
